Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
