Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to escalate to a rare Category 5 cyclone as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, causing life-threatening rapid inundation and rock falls.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to hit the coast by Tuesday, according to weather experts.

Advisories of electricity outages and structural damage have been announced as Melissa generates up to 76cm of rainfall and sea level surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic season, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Highest-Level Hurricane Threat

A highest-level cyclone is the strongest type, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

Even though this storm is projected to reduce in intensity to a category four storm before reaching Jamaica, experts said there was "minimal real distinction in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "equally strong" when it strikes the nation.

Critical Preparations

With storm-force gusts and precipitation anticipated well in advance ahead of it moves across central Jamaica - perhaps encompassing the capital, Kingston - advisories state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

The nation's leader the statesman commented: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to address nervousness and any apprehension and concern is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to fortify their houses with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on essentials.

Broader Impact

Advisories are also in effect for parts of Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is projected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Mudslides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Future Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to cross Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.

By the point it makes contact with Cuba, it is predicted to have reduced to a third-level storm.
